MASH SYSTEMS
In the coming months, AASHTO performance guidelines found in the Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware or MASH will continue to be implemented throughout the Mid-Atlantic Region.
Have questions about MASH? DPI has been studying MASH guidelines since 2009 and we are here to help if you have any questions regarding when and how MASH guidelines will affect your region.
MASH CRASH CUSHIONS
TAU-M MASH CRASH CUSHION
MASH TL-3 AND TL-2 TESTED.
The Redirective, Non-Gating, Universal TAU-M Crash Cushion is designed to meet MASH TL-3 and TL-2 testing requirements in a compact, partially reusable design. The system is available for concrete and asphalt applications and can shield hazards with widths up to 30” (760 mm). Ease of installation, fast on-sight repairs, and numerous transition options make the TAU-M system an ideal crash cushion to shield most roadside and median hazards. The TAU-M system is also available as an upgrade kit to retrofit existing NCHRP 350 TAU-II Systems into MASH TAU-M Systems.

MAX-Tension TL-3 Gating End Terminal
FEATURING SABERTOOTH™ TECHNOLOGYMASH TL-3 COMPLIANT GUARDRAIL END TREATMENT FEATURING SABERTOOTH™ TECHNOLOGY
The MASH compliant MAX-Tension™ tangent end terminal, with Sabertooth technology, features the next level of impact performance and an ultra-slim design. The system utilizes a tension-based design along with an energy absorbing coupler that features an all new cutting tooth design. When impacted head-on, deceleration is controlled by friction developed in the tension cables and by cutting the downstream guardrail panels. When a side impact occurs, tension cables can help safely redirect a motorist away from the hazard.
In addition, the MAX-Tension terminal utilizes standard guardrail components for significant savings in inventory and maintenance costs. Nuisance impacts during snow removal and maintenance operations can also be minimized due to the narrow design of the MAX-Tension Impact Head.
- Tension-based cables control deceleration and increase re-directive performance.
- Sabertooth technology increases energy absorbing capacity and weakens the downstream guardrail rail to help reduce the severity of impacts.
- Lightweight impact head makes installation quick and easy for contractors.
- MASH Test 3-31 vehicle stopping distance is under 23 feet (7 meters).
- Available as a kit or full system, utilizes standard guardrail panels, posts and components after post 1.

ABSORB-M MASH ANCHORLESS CRASH CUSHION
MASH TL-2 AND TL-3 TESTED.
No ground anchoring, easy deployment/removal, and the shortest length in its class make the ABSORB-M system the contractor’s choice for a work zone ready MASH crash cushion. At 24” (61 cm) wide, it is suited for narrow areas where road and workspace is limited. The system utilizes interchangeable, nested elements to reduce inventory costs and a universal transition takes time and complexity out of installation.

MASH END TERMINALS
MAX-Tension TL-2 Gating End Terminal
FEATURING SABERTOOTH™ TECHNOLOGYMASH TL-2 NON-GATING GUARDRAIL END TREATMENT FEATURING SABERTOOTH™ TECHNOLOGY
The MAX-Tension™ TL-2 tangent guardrail terminal, with Sabertooth™ technology, features the next level of impact performance and an ultra-slim design.
In addition, the MAX-Tension terminal utilizes standard guardrail components and shares many “smart parts” with other MAX-Tension Terminal designs for significant savings in inventory and maintenance costs. Nuisance impacts during snow removal and maintenance operations can also be minimized due to the narrow design of the MAX-Tension impact head.
- Redirective, non-gating at post 1
- Tension-based cables control deceleration and increase re-directive performance.
- Sabertooth technology increases energy absorbing capacity and weakens the downstream guardrail rail to help reduce the severity of impacts.
- Lightweight impact head makes installation quick & easy.
- Available as a kit or full system, utilizes standard guardrail panels, posts and components after post 1.
Max-Tension Median Crash Cushion
REDIRECTIVE, GATING PERFORMANCE FOR NARROW HAZARDSThe First MASH Median Terminal.
The MASH tested MAX-Tension™ Median Terminal, with Sabertooth™ Technology, features the next level of impact performance. The system utilizes a tension-based design along with an energy absorbing coupler that features a cutting tooth design. When impacted head-on, deceleration is controlled by friction developed in the tension cables and by cutting the downstream guardrail panels. When a side impact occurs, tension cables can help safely redirect a motorist away from the hazard.
The MAX-Tension Median Terminal also utilizes standard guardrail components for significant savings in inventory and maintenance costs. In addition, a majority of smart-parts are interchangeable within the MAX-Tension family of end terminals to lower inventory costs even further.
- Tension-based cables control deceleration and increase re-directive performance.
- SABERTOOTH technology increases energy absorbing capacity and weakens the downstream guardrail rail to help reduce the severity of impacts.
- Available as a kit or full system, utilizes standard guardrail panels, posts and components after post 2
